Welcome to our website devoted to Ham Radio and Lighthouses.

There is a strong following of lighthouse enthusiasts around the world and amateur radio makes for an interesting connection.
A lot of ham radio operators served as ship radiomen or worked at maritime coast stations, or did something in their life to do with safety at sea. Then there are those like us who just love lighthouses.

Patty Martin - W5AZO Named
2010 Lighthouse Activator of the Year

Patty Martin - W5AZO has been named as the Lighthouse Activator of the Year for 2010. The award recognizes contributions to the fellowship of Amateur Radio and lighthouse enthusiasts in activating the light beacons of the world.

Whenever anyone hears this XYL on the bands radiating with a certain joy and cheerfulness in her voice they know it is Patty- W5AZO. During the pile-ups and between exchanges one will hear distant voices calling “Hello Patty”. Her enthusiasm of what Amateur Radio and activating lighthouses is all about- promoting the history and preservation of lighthouses and remembering the men and women who served as keepers of these light stations- is self evident. When taking a break from operating the radio, she meets and greets curious people passing by. Why is that woman shouting into that microphone, they ask? Patty takes time out to explain “I'm at a lighthouse and this is a ham radio ”. She has met community leaders, chamber of commerce representatives, and museum curators . Sometimes the local hams show-up to see what the hubbub is all about. Newspaper reporters have written stories. Whether on-the-air or on the ground there is always a stir about when Patty is "activating" a lighthouse.

The award is sponsored by the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society (ARLHS).

POINT ISABEL, TEXAS - WIRELESS STATION 1916

The photo below was taken atop the Point (now Port) Isabel Lighthouse in 1916. The station was built on 20 acres with two 330 foot triangular steel towers spaced 1250 feet apart. The Point Isabel site was one of three wireless stations strategicly placed by the U.S. Navy to cover the whole of North America. The First New York Cavalry was part of a contingent to set-up the wireless station as seen by the tents and horse-drawn wagons next to the towers. Link to: A Short History of the Beginnings of U. S.
